Air Pollution vs the Respiratory System An average human consumes about 11,000 liters of air in a day. Not only are we breathing in natural gases such as oxygen and nitrogen, but we are also inhaling other matters that are potentially dangerous to our health. These air pollutants that we breathe in are divided into two separate categories: primary and secondary pollutants. Primary pollutants are emitted in the form in which they were produced. This includes: smoke, inorganic gases such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide, sulfur dioxide, and greenhouse gases. Secondary pollutants are primary pollutants interact with another pollutant in the air. This includes ozone, smog, and acid rain. All of these that were listed are the forms of air pollution that humans are continually exposed to every single day. Air pollution not only affects our natural environment and economy, but also our health whether we realize it or not. There is however, a big difference in levels of air pollution aroun d the world. The first world country of United States has a much better air quality than other countries such as the third world country of Pakistan.
